Mastering Internal Communication Solo: Lessons from a Team of One

Picture this: a fresh-faced 26-year-old, taking on a role leading internal communication (IC) as a team of one. If you had asked me back then what I thought I was signing up for, I would have been way off the mark. Like many IC professionals, I stumbled into this role, but little did I know it would become a transformative journey that led to my new book, “Me, Myself, and IC.”

Navigating the Uncharted Territory
My first encounter with IC leadership was far from what I envisioned. I was the second member of the recently revived communications team at the company. The catch? There was no clear roadmap for where this team was headed. My tasks ranged from crafting newsletters, managing an intranet, to juggling a shared email inbox—it was a messy mix. Success seemed to equate to the mere act of hitting “send” on an email.

The Drive to Make a Difference
As someone relatively new to the IC arena, and with the unique challenge of being a team of one, I saw potential where others saw chaos. I dove in headfirst, determined to revolutionize our IC approach. What quickly became apparent was that I wasn’t alone in this lone-wolf journey. Many fellow IC professionals found themselves in similar solitary roles, yet there was a glaring absence of guidance tailored to our unique situation.

Crafting Success Through Tenacity
Undeterred by the lack of resources, I tapped into my communication skills and embarked on a journey of self-discovery. I scavenged for knowledge, experimented, and developed a self-taught tool kit that proved indispensable. The result? Within three years, I steered the company’s IC perception away from a mere content dispenser to a valued strategic partner with champions in senior leadership.

Introducing “Me, Myself, and IC”
Today, I’m excited to share the insights I gained during those transformative years and beyond. “Me, Myself, and IC” is the guide I wished existed during my inaugural solo IC role. My goal? To empower fellow solo IC professionals with the confidence and know-how to conquer the challenge of kickstarting or revamping a crucial business function. Our potential as teams of one is boundless.
