Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Positioning the Value of Internal Communication in a Fully Remote Setting

With the widespread transition to remote work due to COVID-19, discussions surrounding the phenomenon of remote workers being "out of sight, out of mind" have gained momentum. According to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), a significant 67 percent of surveyed leaders admitted to perceiving remote workers as more easily replaceable than their on-site counterparts. This proximity bias has further resulted in remote workers being promoted less often than their in-office peers internal communication (IC) already contends with challenges related to its value and purpose, the shift to fully remote work necessitates even greater efforts in educating organizations about the inherent value of IC. To navigate this landscape effectively, here are few ways you can help ensure IC stays top of mind:

  • Clearly define your role and function—Clearly articulate the purpose and mission of your IC team, highlighting how it aligns with the organization's goals and objectives.

  • Showcase tangible outcomes—Demonstrate the value of your team by showcasing tangible outcomes and results of successful communication campaigns, initiatives, or projects. Use data and metrics to quantify the impact whenever possible.

  • Develop a strong online presence—Establish a strong online presence using digital platforms like the company intranet, collaboration tools, and internal social channels. Consistently communicate and engage with employees through these channels to create visibility and awareness.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally—Actively collaborate with other teams and departments, offering your expertise and assistance on projects that require effective communication. This collaboration showcases the positive impact of your team's involvement.

  • Measure and communicate impact—Continuously measure and communicate the impact of your team's efforts. Use relevant metrics such as employee engagement, satisfaction surveys, or communication effectiveness to demonstrate the value you bring. Regularly report these results to key stakeholders.

By focusing on these five key aspects, you can effectively educate the organization about the value of your fully remote IC team.
