Climbing the IC Ladder When You're a Team of One

Leading internal communication (IC) as a team of one can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s a fantastic opportunity to shape your organization’s communication strategy, but on the other, it often comes with limited promotional prospects within the same organization—unless you’re willing to switch fields. Sure, you could pivot into external communication, explore marketing, or dive into human resources. The possibilities are endless. However, if you're genuinely passionate about IC and don't see yourself changing tracks anytime soon, a 'promotion' might mean something entirely different for you:

 

  • Role Expansion—As a one-person team, you’re not just maintaining the status quo. You're strategizing and innovating, which means that the job description you started with is likely outdated. Your responsibilities have expanded far beyond the initial scope, so it's only fair that your title and compensation reflect this growth.

 

  • Elevation to Leadership—With your dedicated efforts, the value of internal communication becomes increasingly evident. As you prove its worth, advocating for additional team members becomes a more straightforward task. You’ll have buy-in from key advocates and stakeholders, so make that play for a direct report.

 

  • External Opportunities—While you may adore your current organization, there may come a time when your passion fades, or you see limited growth opportunities in your current role. Maybe you've significantly evolved the role but haven't seen the corresponding raise in pay or change in title. In those cases, seeking IC opportunities elsewhere can be a valid and rewarding option. This can lead to fresh experiences in different teams or industries, aligning more closely with your career goals.

Being a team of one provides you with ample room for professional growth and transformation. It's an exciting journey. However, it's equally important to recognize your true worth and have a clear vision for your career growth. This clarity ensures that you’re always working toward the goals and opportunities that matter most to you.
